WATERSIDE STRIKE

UNLOADING OF SLAG

NEW PLYMOUTH, 13th February. A strike of waterside workers unloading slag into trucks from the ship Port. Napier held up work at New Plymouth this afternoon.

When work commenced this morning sheeters working on the wharf claimed an additional rate of 6d an hour for handling slag, which they are not entitled to under the award.

The claim was referred to the Disputes Committee, which refused to agree. According to the award the procedure is to refer the dispute to the National Disputes Committee, work to proceed without interruption. At 4.30 p.m. men working on the trucks refused to receive slings from the ship. No more work was done during the afternoon. The dispute has been referred to the National Disputes Committee.
