BUSINESS IN POLITICS

SUGGESTION BY LORD MELCHETT “It is obvious that the present-day politician.-, do not understand the economic needs of the country, and it seems to me that if we are to preserve our Parliamentary forms of government it is vital that we should bring them up to date by adding a new chamber designed to meet the necessities of the 20th instead of the 19th century,” says Lord Melchett, in the London “Evening News.” “I suggest that industry should he grouped, and that each group should appoint its best man to serve, accompanied by their opposite number appointed by the appropriate trades unions. Further, that scientists, bankers, economists, merchants, and others should also he appointed to serve by their respective professional or trade associations, such as societies of accountants, universities, or chambers of commerce. I hope lo see this new chamber set up in a form which will enable it to take executive action in all economic matters. The members would he free from the ordinary trammels and disputes of party politics, and would have one interest, and one alone, to serve.”
