TOBACCO DUTIES

CONSTERNATION AMONGST GROWERS A meeting of the Emergency Committee of the Motueka District lobacco Growers was held last evening to discuss the effect of the increased tobacco duties. The committee were unanimous that the extra duties on pipe tobacco with no corresponding addition on imported unmanufactured leaf will have a disastrous effect on the N tobacco growing industry. It was pointed out that cigarettes, manufactured in New Zealand from imported leaf, are subject to no extra duty and no sales tax; and the consequent result will be a direct encouragement to companies, manufacturing' cigarettes, to use the imported leaf to the ultimate exclusion of the locally grown article. This is in direct contradiction to the statement of the Minister that the extent of the protection accorded to growers and manufacturers has been maintained. A special meeting of the full executive will be held to-night (Saturday) with a view to sending a strong deputation to wait on the Government. It is the opinion of the executive and the growers, who now number some 700, that this is the most serious blow that has vet been aimed at the industry.
