WELLINGTON, 9th February

An assurance that the Government was giving consideration to amendments to the Mining Act with a view to preventing abuses by speculators was given in the Legislative Council by I lie Minister of Education, the Hon. R. Masters.

The Hon. M. Fagan asked the Government whether it was aware of the abuses being perpetrated under the Mining Act whereby huge areas of mineral country was being pegged and held for purely speculative purpose,s and if so, was it the intention to introduce amending mining legislation during the present session in order to effectively prevent such practices. “The Minister of Mines is aware that if a few cases the provisions of the Mining Act are being abused” replied Mr Masters, “and with the object of effecting a remedy as far as possible, consideration is now being given to the question of amending the existing law.”
