MOTH AEROPLANES

MODIFICATION ORDER DETAILS OF REQUIREMENTS LONDON, Ist December. Following investigations into certain accidents to Puss Moth aeroplanes, attributed to the flutter rudder, the Air Ministry has ordered that modification be effected, states the aeronautical correspondent of “The Times.” The modification is to be brought about by fitting a weight to the leading edge of the balance portion, sufficient to make the rudded ’statically balanced about the lines of hinges. The modification must be completed within 10 days, during which time Puss Moths should be flown at less than 105 miles an hour, and only in good weather. Those aeroplanes, not modified in accordance with the decision must not be flown at all after the 10 clays’ grace. Emphasis is laid on the urgency of the order by the correspondent, who adds that the Prince of Wales has regularly used a Puss Moth for the last two years, and that similar machines were used by Mrs Mollison, during her record-breaking flight to the Cape, and by ,T. A. Mollison and Bert Hinkler in their Atlantic crossings. The de Ilavilland Company has arranged for supplies of the necessary balances.
