A second “golfer-detective thrill” is given us in “Mr Malcolm Presents,” by Gerard Fairlie, (Hodder & Stoughton). Air Fairlie always gives us a fine story and although the golf background in this “thriller” makes a special appeal to players of the game, there is ample material in to hold the closest attention of all lovers of fiction. Some famous golfers are introduced incidentally. On the classic course at St. Andrews, a momentous contest was taking place—the memorable triumph of Bobby Jones over Cyril Tolley in the amateur championship of 1930. In the great hotel within view of the players a far more deadly contest was being waged in which a death occurred —a man was killed. For one fleeting moment the dead body was seen by Marilyn Gay nor, but then it disappeared. The hotel manager was
convinced that she had imagined the gruesome sight. The police had their theory. But the ingenious Air Alalcolm again proves them all to he wrong —or Aids the police to the right conclusion in an admirably conceived plot. ■ And lie parts good friends with the police inspector and rejoices over a plate of porridge at the final happiness of Marilyn. The latest issue of the “N.Z. Artists’ Annual” is one of the largest and probably the finest in its seven years 6f publication. The cover design is in ' four colours by Air George Finey, formerly of Auckland. Famous New Zealanders now abroad contribute exclusive drawings and stories, notably David Low, Harry ltountree, Hector Bolitho, Mervyn Skipper, R. W. Coulter, and others. It is a fine array of N.Z. talent. Prominent people ail over New Zealand are caricatured, over 40 pictures being included. Air Pat Lawlor, the editor and originator, is again to be congratulated.
