TELEVISION SUCCESS

STRIKING DEMONSTRATION APPLICATION TO CABLEGRAMS LONDON, 4th September. Scientists attending the British Science Congress broke into cheers when sitting in a darkened schoolroom at York, they suddenly saw a message of greeting from Chelmsford spell itself out on the screen. It was a demonstration of Sigtior Marconi’s new television tape machine, says the “News-Chronicle,” which enables messages typewritten in London to be read immediately on a screen thousands of miles away. Already, according to the newspaper, messages televised from Chelmsford have been read with complete accuracy in Sydney. The invention is the outcome of Signor Marconi’s instruction to his engineers, Messrs 11. M. Dowsett and D. L. Plaistowe, to concentrate upon the commercial possibilities as distinct from the entertainment side of television. “We hope the invention will be used to supplement the present cable system,” said Mr Plaistowe. He added that an improved method of picture television also had been discovered, giving stronger, clearer and more detailed pictures, which can be seen in a partly-lighted instead of a dark room.
