BOY SCOUTS
WAIMEA TROOP (Contributed) The Waimea troop of Boy Scouts officially met in the Institute Hall on the 21st June. The, Scoutmaster gave a talk on Scouts and scouting and introduced the* A.S.M. It was decided to meet every Wednesday at 7 p.m. The following Wednesday we all rolled up with determined minds to start work. The P.L’s! chose their seconds and had a talk with their patrols. On the 6th July the Patrol Leaders started training their patrols for their tenderfoot badges. A community sing was held in Richmond on the next parade night, so after the roll call we were detailed to help in connection, with this matter. Several of the boys were ready to pass their tenderfoot test, so while they were being put through their paces by the Scoutmaster the patrol" leaders continued the training of those who were not quite so far advanced. Most of those who went for this test passed. At the present time there are 25 on the roll with every indication of the numbers increasing. August Ist was a red letter day as it marked the beginning of the scouting proper, when we went for a whole day out in the open. We tramped over the hills Ct the back of Richmond to the caves in Aniseed Valley. These were found successfully and everyone was satisfied. This was an excellent opportunity for us to practise our patrol calls, etc., and for fire lighting and cooking. Some of us arrived home minus patches of skin and with nice new uniforms rather dilapidated. Owing to rain our next parade was rather meagrely attended but a demonstration on boxing quite repaid those who did come. Most of us are managing to get our uniforms by degrees and we hope to be a properly turned out unit before very long. We have had several lectures on first aid, with some of the Scouts studying very hard for the ambulance badge. Our average attendance is 20; 15 of these have now passed their tenderfoot test and 3 their second class test.
