The prevalence of crime among the Maoris, particularly in North Auckland, was the subject of comment by Mr Justice Ilerdman when sentencing several prisoners to-day. He said there had been an exceptionally large number of cases from the Hokianga district, where lawlessness among the young natives had caused the police much concern. Kaari Smith (39) w'as sentenced to two years’ reformative detention and Robert Harris (23) to twelve months imprisonment for breaking and entering a post office and stealing property worth £124. It was stated that the post office safe was removed to a motor-car and driven 40 miles and that a number of Maoris opened it with an explosive The Judge said he thought lie had imposed deterrent sentences in cases from Hokianga, but unfortunately it appeared they had not had the desired effect
