THE CANINE CARNIVAL
(To the Editor) Sir, — A famous dog convention lately held in Hardy street, For all the dogs for miles around had promised there to meet ; Some real dog resolutions were passed with barks and roars, The Alsatian lady suffragette was loud in her applause. They started the proceedings with a real, good, dinkum fight Between a Cocker Spaniel and the dog that barks all night; They fought until the Spaniel had a splendid chewed up ear And the other dog’s hind quarters were put right out of gear. To see the fight four mongrels across the other sid9 Made for the road together when, “Look out!” someone cried. Too late ! A yellow mongrel made fourteen revolutions. While- motor drivers all around with dogs came to conclusions. Until the motor traffic cleared, the dogs made a retreat And killed time seeing everything around about Church street; Then later on they congregated near the grocer's shop, Where scraps and serenading went on till twelve o’clock. The meeting lasted quite five days, they had a raughtv time: The nightly concerts and the fights were absolutely prime. Some scenes were quite uplifting, while others were dramatic, When they held the perambulators up and all the motor traffic. It was the best, mix up of dogs Nelson has ever seen, The poodles and the terriers they numbered quite nineteen; The other twenty were composed of mongrels galore, From little, tikes six inches high right rip to Two-feet-four. It was a real dog carnival and will be handed down As the finest exhibition ever hGld in Nelson town , We hope the Mayor and Councillors were there to see the fun, This affecting demonstration of how their town is run. I am, etc., DOGGEREL. Nelson, 29th August.
