FOR PROTECTION
(To the Editor) Sir, —In some cases there is an undesirable arrangement being made between the tobacco grower and a section ot his labour. .My remarks are not intended to encroach upon family arrangements but where nothing but a commercial tie is available between employer and employee then there is a real danger and an undesirable form of engagement. A tobacco grower employs a lad and makes an arrangement with him for 10s per week and his food. The lad to work throughout the season and in addition to the wage to have an acre of tobacco. There is nothing in writing about tins arrangement. As time goes on some trumpery excuse is raised and the bov is dismissed and so passes away ins chance of approximately £IOO worth or tobacco. It is useless to take action because of the absence of proof of any specific arrangement of that kino. \\ noje any parent has a member of tlie family participating in an arrangement ol that kind then it is the duty of that parent to see that the son is protected by an arrangement in writing, fair and equitable to all. The straight man will not quibble over this type of arrangement But the will-o-the-wisp who keeps the bunch of carrots well ahead of tlie donkey will lie nailed to his agreement and F he is not prepared to safeguard the lad then Iris business is best left alone. A guinea to' *t reputable firm of so belt 01s is well worth while in making these arrangements. The contents of this memo are based on fact and every lad should seek the necessary protection. 1 am 6tC ’’ OTTAWA JIM. 19th August.
