COUNCIL’S MONTHLY MEETING CONCLUDING IJUSINESS LONG LIST OF CORRESPONDENCE The monthly meeting of the Waimea County Council was concluded yesterday afternoon. Councillors Corder and Palmer reported on a visit to the Rabbit Island. The planting is progressing satisfactorily, 430 acres being planted by the relief workers. There are at present 23 men employed at present. Some of the trees are evidently suffering from the effects of the dry spell. C. M. Hoult, surveyor, requested the exemption from the provisions of the Public Works Act 1928 of part of Winn’s Valley road. The exemption was granted. The New Zealand Counties Association wrote regarding the cost of removal of electric light poles from county roads. The Council approved of a scheme for the counties equally sharing the cost with the power boards for minor works and the cost of major removals, (over 10 poles) to be fixed by arbitration. The Jubilee Institute for the Blind, Auckland, solicited orders for articles made by the inmates of the institution. The letter was fded for reference, the Council approving of purchases being made from this source if such articles are required. The Inspector of Health notified the continuance of tenancy of the Council’s upstairs office. ~ , . The Takapuna Borough Council stated it would protest strongly against the action of the Government in not availing itself of the provisions of the New South Wales Interest Reduction Act 1931, and requested the Waimea County s support. The letter was received, no action being taken. ... , T Two letter were received from Mapua and Tasman protesting against the closing down of unemployment work at Mapua. The matter was left to the chairman. Mr Geo. Weldon, caretaker of the Rabbit Island, forwarded his resignation. The resignation was accepted and it was decided to call for applications for the position. A Rabbit Island committee was authorised to deal with the applications. The New Zealand Railway Department wrote regarding the installing of pipes to increase the waterway under the railway a short distance above the railway station at Wakefield. The Department’s gang will do the work, the county supplying the pipes. It was decided to thank the Department for its efforts. The engineer reported that he and the riding member had inspected Wilson s road ford and temporary repairs made, there. It was a bad fordway but to do | permanent work would cost more than funds at present would allow. The C'oilingwood County Council asked the Council to consent to the traffic inspector visiting Collingwood with loadometers. The matter was left to the Engineer. The Nelson Hospital Board forwarded estimates for the current year and advised the council of the amount of its levy, £3,648. The Tahunanui Town Board asked the council to support its endeavours to procure a reduction in the charge for electricity by the Waimea Electric Supply Co. It was decided to support the request. It was decided to accept land for dedication of a road from Robert Dagger, Stoke. Mr 11. G. Johnstone, Stoke, offered to contribute £5 towards the cost of protective works, Poorinan’s Valley stream.
Mr W. A. Jessop and others, Hope, asked for a drain to be put in front of the Hope store and Post Office. The matter was left in the hands of the Engineer and the riding member. Mr S. L. Watkins, Pigeon Valley, Wakefield, asked that spoil from the ditch recently made through his property should be used to fill in a washout on road side. The matter was left to the Engineer and the member for the riding. Mr H. G. Berryman, Motupiko wrote regarding the employment of men under the “over the fence scheme.’’ The matte.' is to be referred to the chairman and the Labour Bureau officer.
Mr B. F. Cropp, Wai-iti, requested repairs to Hoult’s Valley road and offered to contribute towards the cost of the work. The Engineer and the riding member were given power to act in the matter.
The Nelson Automobile Association wrote regarding two dangerous dips on the Motupiko-Korere main highway. The Association is to be notified that the matter is under consideration.
.Mr R. L. Thomson, Tadmor, asked for repairs to the road opposite his bowser. The latter was left to the Engineer. Tlie Dovedale branch of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union, wrote in regard to a temporary road near the Brandy creek washout, and also asking for the erection of a permanent bridge over the Dove river at Thorpe to be proceeded with. The Union is to .be informed that the matters are being dealt with. Mr A. L. Hocton and others Dovedale, asked for repairs to the Hawkes valley road and Jellyman’s valley road. The Engineer and riding member are to inspect the 'localities. Mr 11. M. Helm, Pangatotara, requested that a footbridge over the Herring stream be replaced. The Engineer reported that the work had been done.
The Pokororo Public Hall Committee asked the Council to give a small piece of waste land near the Graham bridge as a site for a public ball. The Engineer and riding member will inspect the site and report on the matter. Easton, Nicholson and Lewis, solicitors, Motueka, wrote regarding the fencing of an old road giving access to a recreation reserve given by H. N. Cook. The matter was left to the Engineer with power to act. A number of applications from Ngatirnoti, and three from Tasman, for permission to encroach on the road with fences, were referred to the Engineer. Mr E. D. Kerr, Tasman, drew attention to the overgrown condition of William’s road. The riding member and Engineer will inspect the locality. The secretary of the Tasman Fruitgrowers’ Ltd., forwarded £l4 16s, proceeds of a dance for expenditure on relief workers in the Tasman district. The matter was referred to the riding member for report. The Hills-’ Fruitgrowers’ Association, Mapua, asked for improvements to the Pomona road. The matter will be dealt with at a later date.
The Lower Moutere cemetery trustees applied for £3 towards the cost of repegging the cemetery plots. The grant was made on condition that the cemetery was a public one. Mr F. W. Farley, Lower Moutere, asked for permission to make access to hist property from Wilson’s road and requested assistance towards the cost of
the work. The request was granted. Mr Geo. Drummond, Braeburn, asked for a road to give access to his property. The settler is to be informed that the Council could not assist as the property was privately owned. The Moulero Farmers’ Union applied for £5 towards the cost of destruction of small birds. The application was acceded to. GENERAL BUSI NESS It was decided that the Little Sydney road, Riwaka, receive attention. An application by Mr Kingsland for the use of an area on Rabbit island for tree planting experiments was left to the Rabbit Island committee. It was decided that up to £4 be spent on a track on Green Hill.
