RELIEF CAMPS BOYCOTTED

POSITION IN WAIRARAPA MASTERTON, This Day. In face of the continued refusal of the local unemployed single men to. enter the relief camps, the Maste’fon County Counoil has decided to. ask the. Labour. Department to endeavour to get the required number of men from oilier parts of the Wairarapa. If a response is not forthcoming in the Wairarapa, single, men front Wellington arc to be invited to fill tho vacancies.

In its four camps tho county can ah; sorb about 100 single men, but so far only six Masterton men have been willing to enter the camps. These six are working at Blairlogie, where provision was made for a full complement of thirty. The camp at Strenvar has now been completed, while similar ones at Wangehu and Glondonald will he finished in the course of the next few days.

It is held in some circles that the county’s action is a trifle hasty, it being considered that the position will soon right itself. On behalf of the county it is pointed out, however, that it has spent a considerable amount of money in organising and erecting the camps, and waste is entailed in leaving them to stand empty. Although the county’s farm scheme for married men is still banned by the workers’ executive, men in increasing numbers are gradually accepting positions under the scheme. About ten more accepted work on farms during the week.
