HISTORIC DOCUMENT
BRISBANE, 21st June. An interesting document in the form of a memorial to a former Governor of Queensland (Sir George Ferguson Bowen) has been unearthed at the General Post Office, Brisbane. It was presented some time shortly after the separation in 1859 and is described as “tlie memorial of licensees and lessees, merchants, storekeepers, tradesmen and other inhabitants of the districts of Kennedy and Burke” and sought the cancellation of a proposed extension of the telegraph line from Port Dennison to Burketown, via Townsville and Cardwell. It “respectfully draws the attention of the Government to the circumstances that the greater portion of the country along the proposed line is totally unfitted for pastoral occupation, and is known by all explorers and pioneers as barren, rocky juid uninhabitable” —this of country which to-day is considered some of the richest in the State. The memorial wanted the line to go via Dalrymple township, but to-day there is no Dalrymple.
