NEW AWARDS
MANY UNDER CONSIDERATION
AIMS OF THE PARTIES
During the next few weeks a large number of industrial awards are to bo discussed at Conciliation Council meetings, reports the Wellington eorrespon- ; dent of the Christchurch “Press.” By both employers and workers the view is held that whilst every effort will be made to recast awards on the basis of mutual satisfaction, in many cases difficulties may be encountered. The shipowners and the New Zealand Waterside ’Workers’ Federation are still negotiating in an effort to reach a settlement, but | so far no finality has been announced. ' q’liese difficulties already are exemplified • in tiie case of the Dominion engineers’ dispute, in which there are several questions not yet agreed upon. These ini dude wages, classification of work, and ' employment of unskilled workers. ! Frankly, the position is that unless the unions are prepared to meet the employers to a very large extent, deadlocks will be reached, said a representative of tilt employers discussing the forthcoming meetings. This means that awards will lapse. It is unlikely that in such cases the disputes will‘be taken to the Arbitration Court, The position is that the employers recognise that the majority of awards in recent years have been stabilised on a 1925 basis. They are now seeking to review them in conformity with the changed circumstances, and their proposals cover both wages and conditions. Awards to be dealt with in the near future cover many of New Zealand’s leading industries, and include those company workers, dairy factory workers, governing the . employment of freezing cooks and stewards, hotel and restaurant workers, shop assistants, timber workers, butchers . and shearers. At the last meeting of the Wellington City Council, authority was given for the submission of draft claims to the Tramway Union, the existing award having expired. So far the claims have not been received by the Tramway Union, and no action has been taken by that body.
