KEEN CONTEST AT BLENHEIM
VAL BORCOVSKY DEFEATS PLUCKY OPPONENT
The Town Hall at Blenheim was full of spectators to witness an amateur box ing tournament on Saturday night, and the splendid programme, with bout after bout of solid, fast boxing, deserved the support it was accorded. There was not a weak match during the evening. Vai Borcovsky 9.5 (Murchison) met G. Lester 9.8 (Christchurch) the contest, providing a whirlwind fight until the referee stopped tlie light in the fifth round in favour of the Murchison representative. From the first gong Borcovskv rushed in and made the fight, landing numerous lefts and rights to the head and half wav through the round Lester received a short right to tile jaw which sent him through the ropes for a count of foiir. However he recovered like a good one and fought hack toward the end of the round. The second round saw Lester put up a god defence to Borcovsky’s continued aggressiveness and scored with clean punches with both hands which shook his opponent, and on one occasion sent him momentarily to the mat. As if ho had taken no punishment Borcovsky went in vigorously with a two handed onslaught which would have taken a rock to withstand and tilt niid of the round saw Lester on the mat hut the gong saved him. Again tho plucky Lester showed his high quality of determination and sportsmanship. Ho entered the third round keenly and got some of his own hack with a succession of well-timed straight lefts and body hits with his solid right. Borcovsky’s face showed the result of the attack his left, eye being affected. However, tho end of (he round saw him make, a charUcterislic recovery. In round four the pace was so great that it appeared impossible. the fight could last (lie full time. Borcovsky won the round easily Lester going to his corner in a groggy condition. Early in tho fifth after a* splendidly plucky effort Lester went down for a count of eight and after another 'short attack hy Borcovsky he. went down again and Lite Murchison boy was awarded the decision. Lester put up a wonderful losing fight and lie was enthusiastically applauded and cheered on leaving the ring. I’. G. Hawes 8.13 (Christchurch, .runner-up in the New Zealand featherweight championship) met U. Raynor 9.7 (Blenheim), but as the latter could not, make the weight it was a no decision hold—nevertheless an “all in” mulch. The bout, from a, purely boxing point of view was easily he host of the evening, the exhibition of both being clever with the hardest and cleanest hilling of the evening. Hawes’s evasion was clever. if a decision had been given after the sixth round Raynor would have, won easily on points. As it was lie was awarded tho trophy for most .scientific boxer the judge being Mr W. E. Mouldy, of Christchurch.
Allen 10.12 (Blenheim', heat S Bad man 10.6 (Blenheim). S, Foley 8.4 (Blenheim) heal F. O'Connor 7.10 (Christchurch). J. I). Naligan 9.0 (Christchurch) knocked out 0. Wav 9.0 (Blenheim) in the third round. N. Fisher 8.8 (Christchurch) and I*. Raynor 8.8 (Blenheim) provided one of the best smaller lights of the evening a willing, clever contest ending in a popular draw. J Bceelt 10.7 (holder of the Parisian Tie Cup) was defeated on points bv W. Francis, 9.5. F. Fail 10.0 (Christchurch gained a narrow points decision over j- Simmons 10.7 (Blenheim) welterweight champion of Marlborough). A. Hauler 1.1.12 (Blenheim) was slow in getting going, but won the decision over il lively boxer A. Bourne 12.0 (Christchurch.) Mr L. C. Cotter was the referee.
