DANGER IN NEW ZEALAND INDIVIDUAL EFFORT .NEEDED CHEERFULNESS AND PROSPERITY “Nothin"' would please me greater than to see a more intelligent interest in national problems,” said the Gover-nor-General, Lord Bledisloe, when addressing the settlers of Waiuku last week. He feared there was a danger of New Zealand coining to lean too much on the Government and on Government action, and putting too little stress on individual effort, such as the effort of the pioneers, which had put the country where it was. Only individual effort and co-operation would bring the country to prosperity. The same view was expressed by His Excellency when replying to an address of welcome at Pukekolie. They were passing through difficult time, he stated, but the surest way of passing through was to maintain l a cheerful outlook and a determination to do all in their power, by their own efforts, with not too great a reliance upon Governments, and by the exercise of j the pioneering spirit, to forge their way ! to the more prosperous times that i undoubtedly lay ahead. The main source of the economic wealth and prosperity of New Zealand was undoubtedly the land and it behoved everyone to do all in his power : to see that the man on the land, and perhaps more particularly the young people, did riot suffer permanently or seriously as a result of the depression. If they displayed a spirit of resource and energy, always moving with the times and meeting the demands of their overseas customers, they would accomplish their task and ensure a heritage for those who came after them. “If at present produce’ prices are low, and we know that in most respects they are woefully low,” said His Excellency, “it is due to the fact that our chief customers have not sufficient money in their pockets. Those customers are the working men in British factories. It is up to us to patronise and purchase the goods made in those factories and put more money in our customers’ pockets.”
