THE PROPOSED TOBACCO FACTORY
(To the Editor) .Sir,—l have read with interest the courteous letters of Captain Aloiicrielf and Mr Walker. Constructive* criticism such as this, unveiled by a nom do plume, is helpful and useful. i do not for the moment intend to reply seriatim to the points raised by Captain Aloiicrielf ; all 1 wish to do in tliis letter is to remove a misappreheiv sion should one exist. If the Council is enlilled io any censure or praise for its action, and it all depends on the point of view of “the man on the street,” then such censure or praise must be borne or enjoyed equally by every Councillor save Councillors Neale and Gibbs. Councillor Gibbs is, as every one knows, abroad. On (he discussions in the Council re the factory, Councillor Neale neither intervened nor voted. His attitude all through the discussion was marked by dignified aloofness and even when asked for in formation lie was hesitant to supply it. He has devoted a tremendous amount of time, care and thought to furthering a project which in his opinion would he beneficial to the district so it is only fair that the above facts should be made known and protect him from any suggestion that he used his position on the Council lo further a project in which lie was interested —r am. etc , STEPHEN 11.
