NELSON R.S.A.
APPEAL FOR INCREASED MEMBERSHIP At a meeting of (lie committee of Lhc Nelson Returned Soldiers’ Association held last evening the president (Mr C. R. Duke) stressed the necessity of increased membership. He was strongly impressed with the fact that the work and service of the association in the interests of the less fortunate would be required for many years to come, and it was therefore necessary to ensure the maintenance of the organisation on an cllectivc basis. The matter was one largely of finance, with which of course was bound up the question of membership. Continuing, he said: “I am convinced, and 1 am sure you will agree with me. that in the interests of the. genuinely distressed, of our disabled men, and of dependents of those who die as a result of their war disabilities, this association must function strongly lor many years to come. The demand for our service to the classes indicated, and in the direction of relieving unemployment shows no abatement. Wo must therefore endeavour to ensure our ability to meet this demand. 1 am satisfied that our membership can be substantially enlarged but the personal touch is probably required. The bulk of the work aiu. scivice of the association is of a personal' and therefore confidential nature, and we cannot have the value of publicity iegarding it. Hut I am sure that returned men outside the organisation to-day cannot but be sympathetic with this work, and that many of them who can afford to do so will, if the position is presented personally to them, gladly extend us their support. I therefore ask the co-operation of committee members, and members generally, in a membeiship campaign ; and at the same time 1 appeal to all returned men, who can possibly see their way to do so, to grvo their support, and so ensure the tultilmeut of the duty which the association accepted at its inception.”
