WAIMEA WEST

LITERARY AND DEBATING SOCIETY The first meeting of the season of the Waimea West Literary and Debating Society was hold in the schoolroom and took the form of a social. Games and competitions were indulged in by everyone and some very close finishes were witnessed in the various contests. The only item of the evening was given by Mr G. McMurtry, who contributed humourous verses composed by himself. The appreciation of the audience was well demonstrated in the roars of laughter that greeted his efforts. Much of the success of the evening was due to the energetic secretary, Mrs Bruce, and to the president, Mr G. A. Kempthorne who kept things going with a swing. The prize winners in the various contests were Miss M. Tomlinson and Mrs R. Price, and Mr T. Hayton and Mr S. Ford. The usual very fine supper provided by the ladies brought the evening to a successful close. Next week the first debate takes place, “Which has the greater influence on character, heredity or environment.” Messrs Kempthorne, S. E. O’Hara and 0. O’Hara will advocate heredity; while Messrs Sinclair, McMurtry and M. Palmer will take up the cudgels on behalf of environment.
