RICHMOND
BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETING At the fortnightly meeting of the Richmond Borough Council there wero present: Tho Mayor (Mr H. Warren Kelly), Councillors Malloch, Polglaze, Schroder, Haycock, E. Croucher. Councillor S. A. Croucher was excused from attendance. Accounts totalling £lsl 3s lid were passed for payment. The Nolson Provincial Progress League asked the Council for its annual subscription, also that a representative of the Council bo appointed to sit on tho League council. It was resolved that £5 be granted, and that the Mayor represent the Council on the League. Mr R. J. Polglaze secretary of the Boy Scout movement in Richmond applied for the use of a room one night a week, for training purposes. It was resolved that the use of the Institute Hall be granted, the building to be kept clean and tho scouts to be responsible for any damage. It was left to the Mayor to fix a night for the use of the hali. General satisfaction was expressed that the scout movement was being inaugurated in Richmond. Mr 11. Dent asked that noxious weeds be cleared on borough property adjoining the Railway land. The work is to be done. FOREMAN’S REPORT
The foreman’s report was read and adopted. It stated: — “The grader has been worked on the following roads and streets: Salisbury road, Gladstone road, and Appleby road has been graded twice. Champion road, Wensley road, Lower Queen street, and Wesley street. Forty-three and a-half vards of gravel have been carted for the footpaths and Lower Queen street. The ditches in Salisbury road have been cleaned out and the footpaths cleaned and rubbish carted away. The footpath and watertable in William street has been cleaned. . “On 11th of June the reservoir was overflowing. “The ditches at the Recreation Ground, Lower Queen street and Beach road need cleaning.” Arising from the report it was resolved that work on the ditches mentioned in the report be carried out. W. E. Wilkes Ltd., applied for a permit to erect a dwelling in Salisbury road. A provisional permit was granted. GENERAL BUSINESS The Mayor stated that he had been approached by the Unemployment Board re a site in the borough for a married men's unemployment camp. Tt was resolved that authority bo given for a site to bo granted for the camp, the site to be fixed at a later date. Ro the reservoir, it was resolved that the gravel and sand for cement-work be carted to the reservoir at the earliest opportunity and utilised when opportunity offers. Councillor Haycock brought up the question of planting shrubs round the Memorial Buildings. Ho stated that he had visited a nurseryman in Nelson and made arrangements for a supply of shrubs. It was resolved that 30 shrubs bo procured the planting to be loft in the hands of Councillors Haycock and Polglaze. Councillor Schroder referred to the condition of the Council building at the beach. The matter was referred to tho works committee.
On Councillor Schroder’s motion it was resolved that Bateup’s road be graded and the spoil removed. It wns resolved that application bo made to the light companv to have tho lights at the old Council Chambers put on the same footing as those at the Fire Brigade Station ; also that a reduction he asked for on street lights.
