INDIGNATION MEETING

SERVICE PROPRIETOR LOSES LICENSE FORCED OFF THE ROAD (By Telegraph-Press Association) WAIMATE, This Day. A largely attended indignation meeting discussed the position of Andrew Shanks, who lost his license for a bus run from Waimate to Timaru. Shanks lost a leg in an accident and purchased a bus business in May, 1931, with the compensation money. The local licensing authority licensed Shanks, but a competitor appealed and the Appeal Court cancelled the license. The meeting, which included ministers of religion, the Mayor (Mr Dash), and Mr Bitchener, M.P., agreed that Shank’s service was satisfactory and protested against the legislation which forced'liim off the run and provided no compensation. It agreed to support him in any transport business undertaken, also to suggest that the Railway Departrnent engage him to transport passengers from Waimate to Studholme in place of the railway bus.
