FAMOUS BOW BELLS
RESTORATION OFFER . - LONDON, 22nd April. Mr Gordon Selfridge, tlje department store owner, is believed to lie f the anonymous American who has olfered to pay for the restoration of the famous hells of St. Mary-le-Bow Church in Clieapside, one of Sir Christopher Wren’s masterpieces. These hells, which, according to lemmd, called Dick Whittington to become Lord Mayor, have now been silent many years. Their preservation would have been impossible hut for Mr Selfridgo’s gilt, which is understood to be about £SOOO. The Church authorities are still seeki„«r £OOOO more for urgent repairs to the steeple roof, walls and organ of what they describe as “the most famous parish church in England.”
