LONDON MARKETS The Department of Agriculture has received the following cablegram, dated 30th April, from the High Commissioner for New Zealand, London: — Tallow : No auction until next week. Market quiet, with no alteration in prices. Hemp.—Manila : Market dull and inactive. Value of “K” grade for AprilJune but steady at last quotations. New Zealand: Nominally unchanged ; no offers reported. Fruit. —Apples: S.S. Coptic and Otira consignments practically cleared. Cox s Orange, exceptionally wastv, 4s to 14s, others, 9s to 11s 6d. Pears: Conference 14s, and Backhands Triumph 15s. .S.S. Rangitiki discharging. Condition of fruit reported very forward. FROZEN MEAT Messrs Levin and Co., Ltd., have received the following cable from their London agents, dated 29th April : North Island Down lambs, 28/36 7£d per lb 56/42 7il, best North Island crossbred lambs 28/36 7d, 36/42 6/d; North Island second quality lambs average 30/31 6jd; best North Island wether sheep under 481bs, 4|d, 48/65 4/d, 56/64 4d 64/72 3/d; North Island ewes under 481bs 3Jd, 48/56 3|d, 56/64 2/d, 64/82 2|d. New Zealand prime ox beef, 160/220 none offering. Compared with last week’s quotations North Island down lamb 28/36 /d per lb lower; 36/42 /d per lb lowen Best North Island crossbred lamb 28/36 /d per lb lower; 36/42 gd per lb lower. North Island second quality lamb, best North Island wether and North Island ewes gd per lb. lower. The market is weak and transactions small. There is little, likelihood of any rise in prices in the near future, unless the demand improves. LONDON RETAIL MEAT PRICES The New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board has been advised by its London manager that the following retail prices are being quoted for New Zealand lamb and mutton retailed in London on 29th April:—New Zealand lamb, legs lid lb, shoulders lOd, loins 9d, necks 4d, breasts 3d, forequarters 7£d, hindquarters lOd. New Zealand mutton (wether), legs Bd, shoulders 7d, loins 7d, necks 3d, breasts 3d. RAW MATERIALS (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) LONDON, 30th April. Friday’s closing prices for the following raw materials were as follows, those for 22nd April being given in parentheses : Cotton.—Liverpool quotation, American middling, June delivery, 4.46 d per, lb (4.68 d). Rubber.—Para, 3 5-8 d per lb (un- j changed) • plantation smoked ribbed sheet, 2d per lb (1 15-16 d). ! Jute.—May-June shipment, £l6 12s 6d per ton (£ls 16s 3d). Copra.—May-June shipment, South Sea, £l4 15s per ton (£l4 10s) ; plantation Rabaul, £l4 17s 6d (£l4 15s). Linseed Oil.—£ls per ton (spot, nominal) ; May, £l3 12s 6d. Turpentine.—s7s 9d per cwt (56s 6d). Osmiridium.—Tasmanian, £lO to £l2 per ounce (same). CUSTOMS REVENUE (By Telegraph—Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, 2nd May. For the month of April, as compared with April, 1931, Customs duties collected in Christchurch showed an increase of £590, and beer duty increased by £628. The motor spirit tax showed a reduction of £4502. Figures for April are as follows: — Customs, £61,961 (last April, £62,551); • beer duty, £6538 (£5910); motor spirittax, £16,906 (£21,408); tyre duty, £984 (£1040). For the four months of the calendar year the figures are as follows:—Customs, £248,002 (£251,293)j beer duty, £25,792 (£23,993); motor spirit tax, £69,531 (£78,759); tyre duty, £3965, (£6244).
