TOKIO, 3rd March.

It is officially stated that Japanese troops, having now effected their object ,and driven off the Chinese nineteenth army, will not attack further unless themselyes attacked. Detachments winch in the course of operations proceeded beyond the twenty kilometres, are returning to that line, awaiting confirmation that the Chinese are not returning and then withdrawing to the ShanghaiWoosung line, leaving the twenty kilometres zone guarded by neutral forces. A meeting of local commands was arranged for the afternoon to discuss the situation. Tt is hoped the fighting is finished. Troops at present afloat will be utilised for replacements, all returning home upon the restoration of normal conditions.
