ROWING

SUCCESSFUL PAIRS ROWING FOR A RIOS CHALLENGE SHIELD RACES WITH KAWATIRI CLUE IN VIEW (By “Stroke") Last Saturday saw the commencement of pair oar racing in Nelson and it is hoped this will ho one of the outstanding features in club racing in seasons to come. Pair oar racing is harder than racing in fours and it takes time and patience to teach a new member the art of handling liis paddle. j The first race, Russell and Cubb v.! Baigent and Winter, proved a very bard race. Baigent and Winter bad been rowing well together for some time and) were looked on as one of the outstanding pairs in the club. Russell is probably the fittest man in the dub to-day and it is bis consistent training that won him the race. Curry ami Davis v .Hunt and Griffin was the next race. Hunt and Griffin settled down to training during the last few days before the race vheveas Curry and Davis bad been training fairly regularly for some time. The latter pair rowed well together throughout the race and looked likely winners of the Shield. In the third race Hill and Russell beat Jarvis and Toll. The former crew easily outclassed their opponents. Hill and Russell had been taking advantage of (he morning for training whereas Jarvis and Toll had been training in the evening when opportunities offered. clad Jarvis and Toll had sufficient training they would have given their rivals a 1500tl run. . Although Curry and Davis rowed a. good race they ' were unsuccessful 111 winning the filial race of the day from Russell and Gubb. On Thursday evening Russell and Gubb won the filial heat from Hill and Russell. Both crews were escourted down the harbour by two fours. The plant is now in good order. Inc constant use of the pairs has given the fours a spell. This has given the club an opportunity of giving them a new “coat of arms.” The Rogers Cup crows have now been selected. The selection is about as even as it could be and some keen racing is likely to eventuate. It is_ the strokes duty to keep heir respective crews m training. “Stroke” wishes to point out this fact because on tjic rowing of tins competition the crows for the Easter Regatta will he selected.
