While tile Britannia was proceeding to the opening races at Cowes regattathe yacht heeled over and a wave washed overboard the second mate, Ernest Friend. The King was deeply moved by the tragedy and took an active part in the rescue work, but a heavy sea was running, and Friend, though a- strong swimmer, was unable to keep afloat. The Britannia searched the spot for half an hour without result. Meanwhile there was tremendous excitement amongst spectators ashore and on yachts at Cowes. A rumour that the King had met with a mishap was soon dispelled. The King returned to reassure tlie Queen.
