SEVEN ASIDE TOURNAMENTS THREE GRADES AT PLAY Pit! VlT’iK, NELSON AND OLD BOYS WIN Yesterday the usual “Spud" Monday seven aside tournaments were held at Trafalgar Park in line, weather with a fairly large attendance. Pirates. Nelson and Old Boys won the respective emupetitions in the senior, junior and third class grades. SENIOR Pirates beat Old Boys Pirates kept the play in Old Boy territory at the start. Then Alexander reversed the play across the field to Patrick and Snodgrass who was tackled and Newman broke away with the ball for a try under the posts. No goal. Then Griffiths saw an opening and went through for a try which Newman converted. A passing rush to Snodgrass’s wing saw him kick hard and follow up the play going to the front, of the goal where Old Boys hooked and Patrick potted a goal. A passing rush by Pirates saw L. -Max score an unconverted try. From Newman’s kick out from the 2f> Snodgrass fielded the ball and ran infield, passing to Alexander, Patrick and Busch who finished a bright movement with a try. Mabin replaced Ron Busch who retired with 1111 injured ankle. Pirates thus won bv 11 points to 7. Wnimea Eliminate Nelson L, the match between Waimea and Nelson Mellwraitli failed to gain possession when trying to cut in allowing Fowler to kick the ball across to Watson who gave Wells a clear run in for a try. Waimea scored first when Brooks went on the blind side, dummied the opposing winger and passed to Kearns, who ran home for a try near the corner. No goal. Fowler cleverly (lodged through the Pirate hacks and reverse passed to Sutton and Kearns who put his foot into touch near the corner. Sutton missed narrowly with a long shot at goal with a penalty kick. Brooks again went on the blind side, sending a nicely-limed pass to Kearns who run in for his second try. No goal. Nelson threw the ball about in fine style, Chapman and Stewart- being prominent, Ricketts finishing oft with a try. Stewart broke away at halfway, opening the play to F. THIRD CLASS The third class competition was continued in tho afternoon, the semi-finals resulting:— Old Bovs 5, Waimea 0. Rival B 3, Nelson B 0, after extra time. Old Bovs Win Final

Old Boys’ combination and pace were 100 much for Rivals in the final of the third grade matches. The teams were as follows: Old Boys: Chapman (c), Walker, Powrie, Morris, Logan, Cox and Withers.

Rival: Mayers (c), Pike, Bruce, Ercolano, Mortcnson; Gill and Mason. A scrum near half way saw Old Boys hook the ball, Chapman passing to Morris, Logan to Cox, who outpaced the, opposition for a try, which Morris converted. A pot by an Old Boy back went across the field and Cox ran up to touch down for a try which Morris converted. After Rival had attacked for a short period went on the blind side and alter a good run sent Cox in with a clear run. Morris converted. Chapman notched a try by a solo effort on the blind side of a scrum near the line. All the Old Boy backs handled from halfway, Withers making a long run down the line for a try in tho corner. Morris’s kick hit the upright. Old Bovs 18, Rivals 0. NELSON vTpIRATES HARD FORWARD RATTLE

The senior championship match played at Bright water between Nelson and Pirates on Saturday resulted in a poor display of football on a heavy ground. There was much talking among the players. Pirates perhaps being the worst offenders in this respect. Some of the language that wafted to tho touchline at one period was not of the kind uspally heard in polite society. The teams were as follows:

Nelson: Martin, Flowers, W. Snow, McLean, Edwards, Harris, Austin, Garvin, Phillipps, Reed, Mellwraitli, Sexton, Hawthorn, Scoltock, Wright. Pirates: Sliuttlewortli, Bryalit, L. Max, Faulkner. D.. Max, Smith, Hunt, Basliford, Bensemann, Papps, Buckley, Newman, ~ Griffiths, MeMurray, G. Thomson.

Newman kicked off for Pirates against a light breeze which gradually decreased as the game progressed. The ball was returned to half way hut L. Max and Shuttleworth broke through to the 25 and play was carried on to near Nelson’s line, whero tho ball was kicked hard to Papps, who failed to hold it and McLean and Co. swarmed through to the other end of the field. Iteed and Griffiths exchanged kicks, then the former punted high in front of the Pirate goal, ,a' hard struggle ensuing till Papps brought relief with a good line kick well up toward halfway. Further kicking ended with Reed finding the line in Pirates’ 25. From the line out Max and Bryant took play to halfway, but McLean led his forwards to the Pirate line whero scrambling play followed till Newman dashed in and saved. The Nelson forwards again attacked and crossed the lino, but the ball went into toucli in goal. Good line kicking by Newman gave his team the advantage, which was nullified bv an infringement. Phillips sent his backs away but a forward pass spoilt a likely movement. Reed missed a very easy penalty kick. Phillips broke through ana gained 20 yards but could not get the ball away. Max led his forwards up tho field but Wright saved smartly. A penalty to Nelson for offside play by Hunt and Reed found touch near the corner. 'Flowers dribbled to the line and nearly scored. The ball went to Reed who kicked high, '1 hornson failed to field it, and Mcllwraith snapped it up and scored, Reed failing with the kick. Nelson 3, Pirates nil. Pirate forwards livened up and play remained in Nelson territory for some time. Newman had a shot a goal from half way hut the hall fell short. Phillips secured and sent the ball to Reed to Mcllwraith who dashed through and ran 30 yards, hut a forward pass spoilt the effort Nelson forwards carried on to the line anil a player actually crossed hilt was held up. ‘ Reed attempted to cross but was thrown out by Griffith. W. Snow dribbled across but was outpaced for possession. Benseitinnn secured and sent, tlio ball to Papps to Buckley, who ran well up but gave a wild pass. Further uncertain handling among the Pirate backs let Nelson through to the line, and a penalty being awarded Reed made no mistake with thekick. Nelson 6, Pirates 0. Reed returned Newman’s kick past, halfway, hut Shuttleworth led the. Pirato forwards hack, Garvin stopping the rush. . Phillips passed to Reed to Moll wraith to .Scoltock, who ran down the line hut put his foot out. I). Max was prominent- in a forward rush but \V. Snow saved and half time sounded with the play in Nelson quarters. Shortly after resuming Reed secured and ran well up kicking high to Newman who fumbled' and Pirates had a busy time. Another penalty was awarded to Nelson, but it was Reed’s day on. Nelson kept up the attack but Pirates gradually worked back to Nelson s 25, McLean and Snow breaking through. A penalty to Pirates at halfway and New inun taking the ball from bis too nearly caught Nelson out of position, a knock on holding up tho movement. Play V{«s Willing, -McLean and Phillips breaking through only to sec Papps save. Phillips opened up the play to his backs the ball 1 going right out to Hawthorn, but nothing was ganied. Another back movement by Nelson was slopped by Griffiths’ line tackling. A wild miss by a Nelson player let Pirates through but Mcllwraith saved and kicked well | up into the Pirate 25. Reed and Scoltock 1 both tried hard to score but the Pirate 1 defence was sound. Then McLean made *an effort but sent a wild puss which i 'Faulkner secured and kicked, lhomson i failed to field the hull and pul his side tin difficulties, retrieving the position I shortly alter with a very line lmc kick. The Pirate hacks thou made great efforts and Rcpd was bustled over the line with the’ ball. From the scrum o yards out Garvin cleared and play was soon a| tlie other end ol the field, where Edwards picked up and scored a try. Heed failed to convert. Nelson 9, Pirates 0. Hard play followed til Newman secured at midfield and kicked across for Shuttleworth who ran up, secured possession and scored under tin* posts. Newman converted and time was called.
