MOTUEKA

REPRESENTATIVE FOOTBALL MURCHISON V. MOTUEKA

The second of the inter sub-union matches was played in fine weather on Saturday at Motueka and resulted in a win for’ Motueka by 14 points to 3 after a fairly interesting struggle. Motueka, losing the toss, kicked off in the face of the sun,,and rushing play to Murchison territory, were rewarded with a try by, Howell, which G. Talbot failed to convert. Motueka 3, Murchison 0. • Murchison settled down to play solid football and mid-field play, in which Park and B. Rowling for Motueka did good work, resulted. Murchison attacked frequently, due to the efforts of Birkett and Gilroy. First Gillespie and then A. Gilroy attempted to open Murchison’s account with penalties but failed. An excellent run by Armstrong saw Murchison compel Motueka to force. From the drop-out Bluck and C. Holyoake combined to carry play to Murchison’s line, where Lunn was unlucky not to go over. Bluck again failed to send the leather to Lunn immediately afterwards. A. Gilroy and his brother in sound football relieved for Murchison, but G. Talbot, fielding brilliantly, put in a good run. From the scrum Motueka heeled to Wright, who sent to C. Holyoake, to Bradley, to Bluck, to C. Holyoake again, and then to Lunn who was forced out at the corner. Halftime brought relief for Murchison. On resuming Murchison took a hand in attack and Gilroy was nearly over. Gillespie next just failed with a field goal. Midfield play with the forwards on each side putting every ounce into it I followed. Murchison heeled from the, majority of scrums, and the Half, Rog-j ers, nut in some good work. In the line outs,' thanks to Park, and Starnes and B. Rowling, Motueka had the advantage. Motueka forwards sent the ball to C. Holyoake, who mulled his delivery to Wright. This player, however, cutting across the scrum, sent to Lunn, who who, after a jinky run, ran over with B. Rowling in attendance. Wright converted. Motueka 8, Murchison 0.

Birkett led Murchison to home territory, where Gillespie, Rogers and Gilroy were nearly over. Following a scrum on Motueka’s line, the Murchison forwards pushed their way over for Armstrong to touch down. A. Gilroy missed. Motueka 8, Murchison 3. The next score came from a long range penalty by G. Talbot. Murchison countered with a splendid forward rush which C. Holyoake stemmed. Murchison were having the better of the game at Ibis stage, and but for lack of finish might have added to their score. Rankin was called upon to save Motueka and lined at half -way, where from the line-out Henderson secured to make a good run, brushing off several opponents to score a good try. G. Talbot failed with the kick. No further score resulted, and the game ended shortly afterwards. Motueka 14, Murchison 3. As in the Takaka-Motueka match, there was seen a good forward struggle, but little sparkling back play. There was evinced no thrust on either side. For their first game Murchison did well and if must be pleasing to the officials to seo that interest is not lagging at that end. ! During the game Askew was incapaci-1 fated, but was able to resume for Mo- 1 tueka. Gillespie, of Murchison, had to retire towards the end of the game with an injured knee, his place being takenby V. Boreovosky. Air J. Goodyev was the referee. |
