REDUCTION OF RATES AND SALARIES (By Telegraph—Press Association) HASTINGS, This Day. The Borough Council announced a reduction in the borough rates of 6.32 d in the £ to sd, totalling £BOOO. The general rate is lowered from 2jd to lfd. The mayor says the reduction is not an indication of lower rates for more Ilian the current year, but only as a measure of practical assistance to ratepayers, many of whom sustained financial loss in the earthquake. Salaries of the borough staff where they are £SOO and above are veduced 10 per cent., and others 5 per cent. The total savings are £IO,OOO. At the suggestion of Mr Mawson, town planner, the Hastings Council last evening adopted a resolution in anticipation of the preparation and approval of a town planning scheme. The resolution limits building to 60 feet ill height with a maximum of four storeys, and makes compulsory provision for light and air space and other formal provisions.
