NEWSPAPER CONCESSIONS ABOLISHED

SYDNEY, 18th Juno. The Postmaster-General has abolishod the concession rate to newspaper proprietors for the despatch of news by telephone on long distance lines to country newspapers. Ho has also prohibited the use of dictaphones in conjunction with telephones for newspaper offices, which of recent years have made serious inrooads into telegraphic revenue.
TRANSPORT BILL
(Received 19th June, 9.30 a.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. „ Mr Lang made a forecast in the Assembly, when he gave his second reading speech on the Transport Bill, that the Act would in a great measure remedy the position into which the finances of tho State had drifted. Drastic steps were needed, he pointed out, to balance the budget of the railways, but he was confident that when the whole of the State’s transport services were co-ordin-ated the huge deficits in this department would be eiimiiiated, Owners of private cars would be in no woy affected by the Bill.
UPPER HUNTER BY=ELECTION
(Received 19lh June, 9.30 n.m.i SYDNEY, This Day. The Upper Hunter by-election result cd in a win for Mr Malcolm Brown (independent Country Party). Mr McMullen (Nationalist) polled over 1100 moro primary votes than Mr Brown, hut the latter secured 90 per cent, of the second preferences of Mr Forsyth, Labourite. The by-election was the result of the death of Mr Cameron (Nationalist). The final figures were—Brown, 5922; McMullen, 5494.
