THE WORLD’S LARGEST MONUMENT
The most stupendous piece of sculpture. the world lias ever seen is in process of completion on the face of a mountain in Georgia. U.S.A. The monument is to commemorate the heroes of the Civil Mar. Each fig lire in it, when completed, will be nearly as tall as the Nelson Monument in London. The fad that the width.of an individual man's nostrils in tho gigantic memorial will measure three feet furnishes some idea of its size. Apart from its dimensions, the method adopted to fix the design on the mountain side is particularly interesting. It was done by means of a spe-cially-built photographic projector, liko a huge magic-lantern. That part of the precipice on which the picture was thrown was previously sensitised for photographic purposes, and, after exposure, it was developed and fixed by pouring chemicals on it from above. It was finally washed by water. The projector was the most powerful ever constructed, and the lens had to ho air-cooled to prevent it melting, owing to the intense heat from the lamp required to project a picture 220 feet high on a. mountain 60 feet away. After tho negative had been developed on the rock face, the outlines of the design were traced in white. The workers who are hewing the design have to be, suspended from long steel cables in. front of the perpendicular face of the mountain.. It is estimated that it will be liftepn years before the design is completed.—Pearson s Magazine.
