MADEIRA REVOLT

LANDING OF TROOPS (United Press Association—Ey Electric Telegraph—Copyright) LISBON, Ist May. Tho Government . is still landing troops at Madeira. Earlier detachments are struggling inland, but are impeded by the hilly nature of the country. The rebels, who have only short-range guns, are unable to reply to the marine bombardment. The Government recovered two steamers from the rebels. The Vasco de Gama fired two shots. One smashed the registrar’s house a mile from the hotel where British residents were accommodated, narrowly missing an adjacent building containing fifteen children. Aeroplanes flew over the city, indicating that the bishop’s peace efforts had failed. REBEL CLAIMS LONDON,) 2nd May. A Funchal message timed 3.10 o’clock this afternoon states that rebel leaders claim to have repulsed bombardments and attacks in four ■ places. Transports are unable to approach the island owing to artillery fire from the shore. Some Government forces are wounded and a destroyer has been towed to the base. REVOLT ENDED

MADEIRA, 2nd May. The revolt has ended.

The Ministry, announces that Funchal was handed over to tho Government today. A later message states that the rebel leaders took refuge in the British Consulate. (The warship Vasco de Gama’s bombardment, though it broke the rebel morale, caused no casualties. Marines and bluejackets landed to protect British lives and property. Foreign residents and visitors are unharmed and civilians uninjured. BATTLE CASUALTIES (Received 4th May. 12.25 p.m.) LISBON, 3rd May. Tho total results of the battle at Madiera are now revealed. The rebels had, three killed and 12 wounded, and the attacking force none killed and ■ two wounded. Little material damage appears to have resulted.
