THE RAT SCOURGE

Rats cost the world £2,000,000,000 a year. London alone harbours some 7.500,000 rats, and there are probably 45,000,000 in the British Riles, breeding at the rate of 500 rats for each pair in thft year. No wonder that, in spite of “rat" weeks,” poisons, fumigants, traps, gassing machines, and many other means, the rats are winning the fight, and that the damage caused by the rodents increases. Hamburg, one of the most progressive cities, seems to have solved the problem by making all its buildings rat proof. Entire blocks of warehouses and shops, formerly infested by colonies of rats, are entirely free, and it is impossible for the rats to return to their former haunts.
