CANADIAN WINE INDUSTRY
FEARS OF AUSTRALIAN COMPETITION (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright), i (Received 25th February, 12.35 p.m.) OTTAWA, 24th February. A message from Toronto states that protests against the present system of selling native wine on liquor permits and fears that the competition of Australian wine and grape juice, were voiced before the Agricultural Committee of the Ontario Legislature on Tuesday by the Ontario grape growers. The reduction of the duty under the terms of the new Australian Treaty on Australian wine and the elimination of the duty on Australian grapes, would work to the - disadvantage of grape growers, the delegation declared. The removal of the restriction on the use of fruit extracts in the manufacture of Ontario wine was advocated, it being stated that Australian wine was made with fruit extracts and had high alcoholic content. Ontario producers had to import large quantities of sugar, and the extensive importation of grapes from Australia would be absolutely disastrous to Niagara Peninsula growers.
