EARTHQUAKE RELIEF
MEETING OF NELSON COMMITTEE At a meeting of the Nelson Earthquake Relief Committee held yesterday afternoon there were present: The Mayor (Mr W. J. Moffatt), in the chair, Mesdame3 Milner and Watson, Miss Tomlinson. Messrs O. Page, E. W. 0. Smith, R. W. Martin, 11. P. Forster, l. W, Huggins, H. Brundell, A. F. Waters, G. P. Russell, J. Stringer, A. Robinson, C. Milner, Dr. S. A. Gibbs, and the honorary secretary and treasurer, Mr C. B. Hodgson. The secretary reported that the executive committee had dealt with relief measures as required. The boat had been met each morning and accommodation arranged for refugees. The laches committee lias been busy tin? articles of clothing. A sum of £2OOO had been forwarded to the Central Fund. Refugees numbering 131 are at present in the City. ' Accounts amounting to £37 were passed for payment.
REPORT OF LADIES’. COMMITTEE
The Ladies’ Committee (Mrs Milner, Mrs Watson and Miss Tomlinson) reported that •a • depot for . the receipt of clothes was ; duly opened as authorised’ by the Executive Committee at the City Council Chambers. So far an excellent_respon.se had been made by the public in sending in clothes, comprising men’s and boys’, women’s and children’s garments. The ladies of Tahunanui forwarded a goodly array of various clothing. This was included in the second shipment from Nelson. . To date some 13 cases of clothing and two sacks of potatoes have been despatched as under:—l6th February, 2 cases consigned to the Clothing Depot, Show Grounds, Palmerston North; 19th February, ‘5 cases to the same place; 19th February, 1 case containing men’s clothing only* direct to Napier; 20th February, 5 cases to the Clothing Depot, Show Grounds, Palmerston North. A rough total of the garments packed and shipped is 730. The Ladies’ Committe is still appealing for clothing, and will carry on the work of despatching so long as the need exists.
In addition to the despatching of clothing the committee had been _ able from the clothes received to provide several refugees now in Nelson with requirements. It has also been necessaiy to purchase items. As a temporary measure in order to assist one mother it was arranged with the St. Andrew’s Orphanage to take charge of two little boys and admit them to their home. ■
The committee wish to acknowledge the kind assistance rendered by Mesdames Davies, Lemmer, Dyson, Misses Atkinson and Niven; and Mr-and Miss Forster. Their thanks are also due to the Anchor S.S. Co for the free carriage of the goods to Wellington.
