WAGES CUTS OPPOSED
A.S.R.S. RESOLUTION .. . L■ •■■■ / (By Telegraph—Press Association) WELLINGTON, 2nd February. The biennial conference of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants of New Zealand, comprising elected delegates from all parts of New Zealand, opened its proceedings to-day under the presidency of Mr James’ Churehouse. The conference unanimously adopted the following resolution: —"That this conference of the A.S.R.S. takes the strongest possible - exception to the wage-reducing campaign being carried on throughout the country, which, if brought into operation, must impair industrial efficiency, reduce purchasing power, and thus further impoverish the whole community. ‘‘Further, we draw the attention of tho Government to the madness of wage-smashing, which must inevitably be followed by the partial destruction of our farmers’ valuable hoirni market, and : an incalculable loss of national wealth, and we would impress upon the; Government the necessity of retaining a widespread purchasing power* to maintain national prosperity; and that, should tho Government- desire an improvement in the finances of the country, such further revenue should be obtained by a tax on large incomes on a graduated scale.”
