LAWN TENNIS
DOMINION CHAMPIONSHIPS (By Telegraph—Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, 27th December. The New Zealand lawn tennis championships were continued in very hot weather. Features of Saturday’s [day were the defeat of Miss Nieholls (former champion) by Mrs Thomson, and the victory of Misses Gould and MacDonald over the holders of the doubles title (Misses Wake and Andrew). Miss Nieholls became exhausted in sweltering heat. Mrs Dykes (nee Miss Spiers) who completely outclassed -Miss Marion MaeFarlane, is now favourite for the women’s title.
Most interest in the morning centred in a thrilling five, set match between C. Aligns, holder of the singles’ title, and H. Dymond. After a hard struggle in which rallies were reintelated Aligns look the first set 10-8. Then Dymond came to light with brilliant interceptions, fast driving, and accurate placing. For a. spell he was irresistible and the crowd cheered numerous spectacular shots that gave Aligns no chance. Dymond won the second set 6-3 and the third set 6-0. There was a reversal of form in the fourth, Dymond falling away and Angus winning 6-1. Dymond, exhausted by his earlier efforts, shaped only a little better in the fifth and became erratic, while Aligns improved. Aligns won the set 6-1 and the match. A surprising match Ri women’s singles was that between MissJfNieholls (present champion) and Mrs Thompson (formerly Miss Tracy). The intense heat affected the players and long and closely eontested rallies added to their discomfiture. Neither ventured to the net often. Mrs Thomson won the first set 6-3. Miss Nieholls rallied in the second set and led 5-0. Mrs Thomson scored the next four games and at this stage Miss Nieholls collapsed through heat. After a spell she resumed but her driving had lost its sting. Mrs Thomson won the set 7-5 and the match. The winner played a steady patient game. in the men’s singles Noel Wilson, was troubled for a time by W. R. Robinson (Canterbury), a former ’Varsity champion and the match went four sets, marked by terrific driving and remarkable recoveries. 1 lie serving at times was beautiful and at others erratic. Each won a service game with four aces in succession. Wilson was clipping tile side line in the last set on both wings and his form was 100 per cent, better than yesterday’s.
