BLACK DUKE’S SPLENDID PERFORMANCE

The Hokitika Handicap attracted seven runners. Black Duke carrying forty more tickets than Killigrew. The race was responsible for a splendid performance on tiie part of Black Duke, who made a forward move half a mile from home, hut was sent back in essaying a run on the rails. By the time lie had recovered he was well hack from the leaders, Coomassie. Beau Geste, Killigrew and Pangolin, but when the straight was reached he had joined them. In the bestfinish of the meeting he. gradually worked to the front and beat Killigrew by half a length, with Beau Geste a length away. Coomussie was close up next, and was followed by Pangolin, and Gold Bag. EASY FOR SAGITTARIUS The public were weil astray in the Summer llandiiap, and heavily supported Flair and Sleipnei-y both failing. After a delayed start Sagittarius assumed command and maintained his place to the finish. lie was followed into the straight by Flair. Sleipner and Atone,

and was not troubled in the run home to win decisively by two lengths from Atone, who finished on strongly to beat Flair by a similar margin. The l)oye was next in front of Sleipuer. Flair did not get away so well as the first day, while Sleipuer also suffered over the early part.
