HAWKE CUP PRELIMINARY NELSON V. MARLBOROUGH The game against Marlborough at Blonheim this week will, as far as can be gathered, be the 32nd official encoun, lor between the piovinces. The first game was played as far back as 6th .March, 1863, and therefore numbers amongst the earliest provincial contests on record. Nine years elapsed before the next match'and only four had been played when the 'nineties dawned. It was not till 1894 that Nelson played the first match in Blenheim by which time Marlborough had visited Nelson five times. As a matter of fact no fewer than 20 of the 31 games have, been played tit Nelson and the home side lias 18 wins to Marlborough's 10, three having been drawn, including last year's when Marlborough were still 200 behind with two wickets in hand in their second innings, ft is strange to note that it was not till 1915 that Nelson scored her first win on the Blenheim ground, while in 1916 Marlborough secured her first success on tho Nelson ground (excepting a first innings' win in 1874). Only five centuries have been recorded in the whole series: 103 by McFarlane for Nelson in 1903; 112, Fearpoint (Marlborough) 1912; 123 Biggar (Nelson) 1925; 138 Neale (Nelson) 1929, and 104 S. During the serias two players (\V. D. A, Chisholm and E. Jt. Neale) have played for both provinces. The highest total ever put up is .Nelson's 532 for five wickets in 1929 ; and the lowest seems to be Marlborough's 23 at Blenheim in 1918. THIS WEEK'S GAME M. Jenkins is now unable to make the trip and will be replaced by G. F. Shuttleworth (Wakefield).
