ON THE TURF

NOTES AND COMMENTS After a period of comparatively easy exercise In Hie .Shade began liis Auckland Cup preparation in earnest at Takanini last week with a solid gallop over a mile. In Hie Shade earned G. Jones and Sargon 15. Stewart, the weights being fairly even and In the Shade had the outside running. They kept close together all the. way and finished on terms in 1.43 3-5. both being stretched out at the finish. .The first half-mile occupied 51 4-ssec, and the second 51 4-5 sec, so that it will bo seen what an even pace was set. It was a good gallop on the part of both horses, although Sargon pulled up the better. This was due to the fact that Sargon raced as recently as last Saturday week, whereas In the Shade has not bad a solid gallop since his return from Riccarlon. A feature of the Irecent Takapuna meeting was the riding of K. Voitre, who piloted three winners each day. Since his return from Sydney in October, Voitre has ridden fifteen winners, and now he is fourth on the list for the season, those ahead of him being 11. Gray 31, 11. N. Wiggins 20 and A. E. Ellis 18.

The South Canterbury three-year-old Red Royal, by Rosenor from Monoxide, was a disappointment on his spring trip to Sydney, while he ran fairly well at Riccarton last month. lie is booked for a hack engagement at Ashburton, and his fpnn will be watched with interest. If he has come on during the last week or two he should show up

prominently and then go on to winning efforts during the holidays. The form displayed by Manawhcnua in his two starts at Takapuna was exceptionally good. Earlier in the season .Manawhcnua did not appear to stay on too well, but in his two races at iakapuna he ran out the nine furlongs m convincing style. He is one of the most, improved hacks racing in the north at present, and be should do fur-J flier good service lor his owner tins season.

The Paeroa owner, Mr J. Irwin, has had the misfortune to lose the valuable two-year-old thoroughbred coll, Hunting Horn. The colt was by the imported horse Hunting Song, from Merry Day, and was showing considerable promise. On Saturday evening the colt had a seizure, and, although every attention was given him, he died on Sunday morning.

All going well Aucklanders will have the opportunity of seeing the Australian Jockey Club Breeders' Plate winner, Movie Star, and his mate, Hunt the Slipper, in action at Ellerslie during the holidays. They are being kept going at Otaki by A. D. Webster, who intends to make the trip with them. This will be their first appearance in New Zealand.

Toxeuma's half-sister l'akitere, who is attracting favourable comment by the way she is working will accompany Toxeuma on the northern trip for the holiday racing. If Sparkling Morn does not win good races, then breeding, appearance >uici track work are not worth consideration. She is to race at New Plymouth.

If Pilar Lap retains his present form for another conuple of years he will be able to win sufficient weight-for-ago races in Australia to increase his present total of nearly £47,000 to £70,000. Meanwhile America's latest figures prove that Gallant Eox is the world's greatest winner. In some previous computations breeders' premiums ..ud the value of trophies were omitted, and they, of course, should have been credited to him. A complete return shows that for eleven wins, three seconds and two thirds. Gallant Eox has won £68,273 in slakes, and that puts him well ahead of anything else, Ksar's winnings, when the franc was at an inflated value, amounted to the paper total of £67,068, and that was the previous best.

Solwit created a very favourable impression by his decisive win at Ashburton, and he bids fair to do further good service for his owner. His dam, Scotch Wit, was bred by the late Sir George Clifford, and is by The Aco from Scottish Star, by Clanranald from Safeguard, by Maxim, and was jjurehased in 1926 by Mr G. A. Kain, who bred Scotch Wit, and sold him privately as a yearling after, the Trentham sales to Mr 11. Preston, who also secured, at the tame time, a filly by Solferino from the Absurd mare, Blush, yet to race. iootfall looked on the big side when produced for the Highweight liardicap at Ashburton. He ran a solid race under his heavy impost, and gave signs of not having lost a great deal of his form. He is to race next at the Dunedin Meeting, and it would not be surprising to find him being led in a winner dining the southern trip. The three-year-olds Biddy's Boy and Biddy Comet, who have done all their racing under E. E. Loomb's supervision, have now joined up with A. Cook's stable at To Awamutu. Biddy's Boy, who is still a maiden, is a very promising sort, and he should turn out a bit above the average before the present season ends.

Snow Prince contested the Taringamotu Hack Handicap at Taumarunui in which event he finished third to the dead-heaters Ruling Chief and Abbey Queen. Snow. Prince was kept a good way out of it for the greater part of the trip, but he finished on solidly down the straight. It should not be long before Snow Prince is found doing better.

Tlie pacer Araclme did lier first racing when trained by F. Monk at Kaikoura. Later she went to the North Island and she has been racing in Auckland for some time past. She is now back at Kaikoura, under F. Monk's charges. Chimes is looking in good order at present, and if he will race up to his best track form he should soon win a stake.

The pacer Kreisler is getting into | good order and will be one of D. Ben-1 nett's team which will be raced on the West Coast circuit during the Christmas and New Year holidays. N. L. Price is handling a big, powerful looking pacer, by Author Dillon from his old favourite. Nordica. The veteran trainer realising that the youngster would require time to mature, has not hurried him and he is now four years old. Price has just put him into work but he will be taken alonjr very slowly. His owner trainer has a high opinion of the youEg pacer. F. J. Smith, the ex-English trotting trainer, who has met with a fair measure of success iince he settled in Auckland, is contemplating a move from Epsom, and Ims entered into negotiations for a property in an Auckland suburban area. Smith has a useful team in hand at present, including Linnett the Great, Queen Elizabeth, Pavlova and Man o' Belle, and expects two horses from Canada to arrive in a week. The Derby candidate Worthy Nor, who has been enjoyiug a short Jet up, will rejoin the team in a lew days. Logan Park looks in good fettle. In the second heat of the New Zealand Cup, won by Wrackler, Logan Park was second, and lie started second favourite to Wrackler in the final on the second day. Unfortunately Logan Park did not go awav light and practically took no part in the race. He has been in steady work since and looks a better horse than he was last month. It is possible that he will go to Auckland for the Cup there, but as his part owner is president of the Wellington Trolling Club, it can be assumed that Logan Park will be racing in the Wellington Gold Cup next month.
