snakes Record Run —Christchurch to Coast & back same day 320 miles .."T. running time Christchurch to Greymouth, 5 hours; Greymouth to Christchurch return, 5 hours 13 minutes .... Total 10 hours 13 minutes Run under the auspices of the Canterbury Automobile Association, primarily for the purpose of proving that the Wefet Goast is npt so very far from the East Goast, and that the absence of a bridge iy# the W is the Qtfly obstacle to quick, direct road travel, the record-breaking run also Igain emphasised the road-worthiness atnd pronounced mechanical excellence which, as every Willys-Knight owner kn(3ws, is the strong feature of WillysKnight cars. The President of the Canterbury Automobile Association, Mr W. It Carey, welcoming the Driver on Arrival in Christchurch , Mr W. R. Carey, the G.A.A. President, said that it showed that one could breakfast in Christchurch, lunch in Greymouth and dine in Christchurch. The feat was an excellent one, and the Association congratulated Mr Christie and gave him its heartiest thanks for undertaking it. The trip spoke volumes for the driver and the car. Mr Christie said that all the credit was due to the car. If the river were bridged the trip could be done every day. . • : :-. : \.•.;:,.. The Standard 20 h.p. 6-Cyliitder Willys-Knight Sedan, selling at £495 D«A«9 that made the Record Run Observer's Report On completion of the trip, the car Was running as smoothly and as well as at the commencement of the arduous journey. No bil was used; no water added on either trip, and other than two punctures, which were beyond anybody's control, there Was no trouble whatsoever, no hesitation in mechanical performance of any nature. The sustained pulling power of the Willys-Knight Sleeve Valve Engine was particularly noticeable when negotiating:the steep climb.over the Otira. Notwithstanding the broken surface of the roads over the Otira, on no occasion was it necessary to change below second gear. Another point of notice was the housing of the motor, which enabled something like upwards of 20 fords on each journey to be negotiated without water interfering with either the electrical equipment or the carburettor. RIDING COMFORT : It was particularly noticeable that notwithstanding the 320 miles covered in the day over road surfaces that, on many stretches, left a lot to be desired, the riding comfort of the WillysKnight reduced physical fatigue of the passengers to a minimum. Notwithstanding the creditable speed of the high -average of 33 miles per hour attained, all town and borough speed regulations were scrupulously observed. (Signed) L. D. PICKLES C.A.A.
