STOKE
MEETING OF PROGRESSIVE ASSOCIATION (From our own correspondent) The annual meeting of the Stoke Progressive Association was presided over by Mr Maemahon in the absence of the president (Mr Hanson). A letter was read from the Tahunanui Town Board stating that those ratepayers of the Stoke water rating area who were within the Tahunanui boundaiy had passed a resolution asking to be left out of the proposed Water Board district, and that a. petition to that effect was being signed. The following officers were elected for! the coming year: President, Mr G. Man-1 son; vice-president, Mr G. Maemahon; secretary, Mr E. Tate; committee, Messr Grant, Scott and Pickup. The information given by Mr H. W. Kelly in connection with the possible formation of a borough was read and discussed. A great many, facts and statistics were given' by Mr Kelly showing that there were privileges and asests, also responsibilities and liabilities incurred in becoming a borough.. The most important fact in the evidence; was that the general rate in Richmond was considerably less than in Stoke. The opinion of the meeting was that Stoke had everything" to gain and very little to/lose by becoming a borough. The executive committee, with the addition of Mr Allport, were appointed a committee of enquiry to obtain further information on the subject and report to next meeting. It was resolved on the motion of Messrs Gribble and Allport that the District Engineer be written to asking whether the overflow from the new Men. tal Hospital reservoir would be allowed to How back into the Poorman's stream or not. It was pointed out that if.this were done it would help maintain the stream for the benefit of the property owners lower down who were opposed to a water scheme.
