Pomp and grandeur marked the ceremonies, which were attended by hundreds of Pekin's most prominent, Chinese and foreigners. Marshal Chang Hsueh-liang, the Manchurian dictator, is reported to have declined a post in the Government, although, maintaining neutrality. ■ A public holiday has been proclaimed in the territory controlled by the northern coalition.

Nanking's military efforts to regain control of North China have been utterly unsuccessful and the position of both armies are practically unchanged.
