Barnard (Labour, Napier) moved an- amendment to the effect that no person shall be disqualified from receiving sustenance on refusing work where there was a strike or lock out. An amendment by Mr E J. Howard (Labour, Christchurch South) to increase the payment of sustenance from 21s to 30s a week was defeated by 31 votes to A further amendment moved by Mr W. J. Jordan (Labour, Manukau) to increase the payments to children from 4s to ss, was defeated by 37 votes to 13" The Leader of the Labour Party, Mr H. E. Pairs—For the amendment, Carr, Munro and Mason. Against the amendment,, Atmore, Stewart and Poison. The Bill was road a third tunc and passed.
