COUNCILLORS AND THE PROGRESS LEAGUE
(To tlio Editor) Sir.—The Nelson Rugby Union is lo be congratulated mi its action in appointing Mi' (l. P. liussell as ils repre si'iilal ive mi ilk> Nelson Progress League, which, according Lo Mr Russell, has done nothing to jushTy its uxisleuro. lAjrUinatoly for Nelson. however, (lie activo ntonibcrs of tlio Progress League are men who have tlio interests of the district at heart and are doing everything possible for the benefit of everyone in the Nelson Province. In the issue of tins "Evening Mail" dated 271 h June, 1930, appears" a letter from Mr (I. .I.\ Russell endeavouring to ridicule the work of the Progress League, lie goes on. to" say, "One of the City Council representatives (on the Progress League; confessed to attending one meeting dining the last 12 months, and the other had not attended at all." in all fairness to the public, Mr Editor, 1 think that the names of these two councillors should be made public. The Council is elected by the ratepayers, and if it considered it advisable to appoint two representatives on the Progress League why are these two councillors neglecting ibeir obvious duty to their city. If they are of the same ruiiuL as Mr G. P. Russell, Jet them say so at the next meeting of the City 'Council and allow the ratepayers' Council to appoint two new representatives who are prepared to do their duty to their fellow citizens. If Mr G. P. Russell is going to take no more interest in the Progress League than the two present Council representatives, then it is up to the Rugby Union to appoint someone else who will be prepared to do his bit for Nelson and the Nelson district.— I am, etc., RATEPAYER. Nelson, 22nci July.
