THE NELSON MATCH
(To the Editor) Sir,—The article in your issue of the lltli inst., sub-headed “Mr Deans Explains” would have been better described as “Mr Dean’s Wriggle,” and it is, remarkable that he did not dislocate his vertebrae in his gyrations. However, as there are one or two points in his statement which require explanation, with , your permission I will refer to them. He is a well-known adept at camouflage, and in want of argument introduces matter quite ill-advised and unwarranted. His statement in regard to the Hon. 11. Atniore and politics and football were quite uncalled for. Had MrDean’s vision extended beyond the ' boundaries of Wellington be would have known that Mr Atmore was an officer of the Nelson Rugby Union, and his status was' equal on that occasion to his own. Another point: lie says Mr Max met Mr Atmore, which is not correct, as tho former Had the day previous arranged with the latter to attend the deputation i if possible, and it was by telephone at i • 1,1 late juncture that Mr Atmore’s pres'ence was assured. Now, sir, Mr Dean 'did not wish the deputation to be re--1 ceived, and it was only by the persistency of the Nelson Rugby Union that, it was achieved. The deputation was informed in the morning that it was a forlorn hope, as the matter had been arranged the previous evening. By whom,? Well, two guesses are not required, and it is surely time that the New Zealand Rugby Union ceased to relegate its powers, and thus sacrifice the smaller unions. One point on this* matter requires publicity, and that is the position taken up by the Blenheim representative on the deputation, who made it quite plain that he was there to support the Nelson application.—l am, etc., F.E.W. Nelson, 13th June.
