FRENCH SURPRISE

TAX RAISED OVERNIGHT Importers of American motor cars in France bad an unpleasant surprise on Iltli April when they found that tlio customs duties on imported cars llad been increased ovorjiight by about 25 per cent. The increase was brought about by a. decision of the Customs Board that in future duty would be levied on the net sale price in France, and not on the wholesale cost of production in the United States. It was stated that this order was issued to prevent American cars from being rushed over in thousands to avoid the new Tariff Bill which considerably raises the import duties. The aim of the French Government is to secure an absolute priority in French markets. It is argued that the prosperity of France is such that there is an enormous scope for the sale of manufactured goods in France itself, and that, by heavy tariffs combined with colonial free ■ trade, this market ought to be kept almost exclusively in French bands.
