SITUATION IN INDIA

NEW ORDINANCES TO SUPPRESS DISOBEDIENCE (United Pre*ss Association—By Eleotrio Telegraph—Copy right,) DELHI, 31st May. The Government of India has inaugurated more drastic remedies to meet 1 he political situation in the country by the promulgation by Lord Irwin of new ordinances to protect shopkeepers from picketing, to stop the movement for non-payment of tuxes, and to deal with attempts to tamper with the loyalty of soldiers, police, and Government’ servants. These measures have been long contemplated, but have been delayed in order to give .Congressmen an opportunity to cease their activities. The ordinances will apply immediately to the Bombay Presidency, but may extend to any part of the country as needed. It is likely that if these measures are not successful the Government will declare the congress an unlawful body.
