NOTES ON SATURDAY'S PLAY

IMPROVED PORM SHOWN

(Uy •'Corner Hit")

Last Saturday's hockey showed a decided improvement, all round. There is little doubt ilit.it there is a decided revival this year and by the end of tho season I fool confident that the standard will be as good as a few years ago. .

Kiwi v. Federal ■Federal played without a goalkeeper and made matters hard for Kiwi. One wonders if this practice should not be V (films' (full back for Federal) played his usual safe game. Moßricle played very well but was not supported by Gibbons'on the wing. McTlrido centres well and was responsible for one score at least. Gibbons (wing) should keep in positiori-. - , „■/ , . ■ . Best, a very useful forward and an excellent' shot,' scored two pretty goals, hut he is inclined to roam. Gibbons (goal) came up and played as snare half. Unfortunately he is inclined to use his weight. Such a.practice does not help tiie team. - A Whilwell played full-back, a long way' out of his place, but ,made a very fair attempt. I would prefer to see him in his old position. N. Whilwell was very soundj and fed his forwards. Mayston is very fast. He should keep with "Amos more. ' _ , , Thomas, on the right wing, is a young player who should do well. Patterson, tho' left wing, scored a nice goaf Amos had tons to do, but did it well.

V.M.C.A. v. Wakatu The contest between. Y.M.C.A. and ' Wakatu resulted in, a good game, but both teams were a player short, Y.M. were without the services of Alf, Wells, who is on the sick list. Oldersha.w was very safe but should cultivate direction. Burns is a good forward, but was not always supported. \ \ Penny made one or two useful solo efforts. He should remember that there are others in the team. . Bbthwell at full back does not get enough weight into his hits and lacks direction. ( ' '■ The Y.M. team, .1s a whole, docs not combine too well but will do belter with experience. ... Wakatu showed better combination and with a full team will later on be vcrv hard to beat. Kelly was the outstanding forward and scored two .splendid, goals. Duncan (half) made a great solo effort and •scored a good goal from well out. ' Marshall (full back;)- saved his team on many occasions. ■-• ' ' Wright scored two; good goals. He should follow in when Kelly has a; shot. For Wainiai O'Callaghan and McKegney are very safe players, but perhaps hit a little too hard. They should remember that the forwards are not all lOsec men. ' Pen-in, who played for Kiwi last year, is very sound, but inclined to do 100 much, solo work. Hunt was a- good forward and hard worker throughout. Cummings should be a full back. He is not fit: enough" for the half line yet.
